The Queens—Queen Street

The building that houses one of Barton’s more recent new pubs was built c.1911 as a Liberal Club. It was constructed on the corner edge of a former ‘pleasure garden’ belonging to New Hall, the wrought iron gates of which now grace the main entrance to Baysgath Park. Its original entrance is now blocked off and entry is gained via the car park off Queen Street; its largest side runs along Newport.

In more recent years it became more well-known as the ‘New Queens Club’, which was a members only venue, and in the summer of 2005 it opened its doors to the wider public as a ‘pub’ and became known simply as ‘Queens’. Its facilities, due to its past history, included a large beer garden and a sizeable function room in addition to its bar and restaurant areas. At the time of writing however, it had been closed for some time and the property up for sale.
